Summary : Bree, a 16 year old who just lost her mother, wants nothing more than to escape her childhood home and the painful memories that come with it. An opportunity arises when Bree gets accepted into a residential program for intelligent highschoolers at UNC-Chapel Hill. However, her first night on campus results in a demon feeding on human energy, an attempted memory wipe by a “merlin” named Sel, and a possible arrest by a strange policeman. In the blink of an eye, Bree gets swept into a world full of “scions,” “squires” and “legendborns.'' Soon, Bree discovers that the death of her mother may not have been an accident and her own fate may be more tangled into this Arthurian legend than previously imagined.
Appreciation : Legendborn manages to incorporate important topics and pieces of history to the action-filled narrative arc. It touches on pieces of Black American history and the mistreatment of women both historically and today. I enjoyed the way the author added pieces of history to a fantasy book so that teens can learn while enjoying the pleasures of reading! I would suggest this book to people who don’t mind a little world-building and who are passionate about fantasy!
